Thea and Viv’s Big Adventure! Guest Blog

June 6, 2012 Interview 52

Hi everybody!  Day 6 here on Thea and Viv’s Big Adventure, and oh, the things we have done and the places we have seen!  And there are more good things to come.
Today’s theme is the jungle, and as I sit down to work on this blog, the first thing that popped into my mind is Rio de Janeiro.  Then the next thing that popped into my mind is Viv, who has been so kind and awesome, positive and energetic as we work on this blog tour together.
Now, Viv has traveled a lot.  I don’t know all the places she’s gone to, but she has definitely done more traveling than me.  So I’m going to bet you, well, a blog prize for a commenter today that Viv has probably been to Rio.
What’s that, you say?  A lucky commenter today is already going to win an ebook?  How true!  But we still don’t know if Viv has been to Rio or not.
Why don’t I just conduct a little bitsy interview with Viv and find out, shall I?
THEA:  So, Viv, tell us—have you been to Rio?  If you have, what were your favorite parts?
VIV: Oh hon! I’ve been lots of places, but this past winter was our first time to South America, and we stuck to Ecuador. BUT! We did go to a Rio. Rio Chico was about a 15-minute moto-taxi ride away from where we stayed while living on the coast for a month in Puerto Lopez. OH BOY, MOTO-TAXI ON THE HIGHWAY-WHEEEE!!
And at Rio Chico? Mudbaths!
THEA:  Today’s technology has opened up the world for writers in some pretty amazing ways.  With access to email, we can (theoretically) work and meet deadlines just about anywhere.  One thing that amazes me about you is that you are able to discipline yourself to write while you are travelling.  That’s something I haven’t yet mastered, because for me, my mind’s all like WOO TRAVEL!!  Could you tell us a little about how you do that?
VIV: It’s hard to explain. I just do what needs to be done that day. I certainly don’t spend as much time playing online while traveling, because, yeah, the WOO TRAVEL is a big part of why we go.
Depending on where we are, I might write, edit or do promo for part of the day, then make sure I take time to play with the family and explore. My husband and daughter are gems—they’ve taken over the cooking/bottle washing etc, and now I don’t have to juggle ALL the balls. I’m so grateful for that. And I love doing things with them. Our son is older now, but we have lots of great memories of trips with him along as well.
THEA:  Which of your stories have you written while you’ve been on the road?
VIV: I wrote parts of Wolf Signs while in the Canadian Maritimes. Wolf Tracks while in Utah. While we traveled the US in a camper for 10 months I wrote Black Gold and Wolf Line, revised Rocky Mountain Heat and Rocky Mountain Haven. While in Ecuador I did edits on Wolf Line, wrote the partial (3 chapters) of Rocky Mountain Desire, and the same for a proposal for the Adrenaline series that will be starting in 2013 from Berkley Publishing—working with the same editor as you! :D
THEA:  In WOLF LINES, your heroine Keri is helping out her BFF on the Arctic Wolf Cruise Lines.  Did you have to do a lot of research for that scenario, or have you been on enough cruises that the writing became more organic?

VIV: I’ve been ON a couple cruise ships, but never sailed, so I had to research some parts. I’ve been on the water lots, but our craft tend to be smaller and tippier. But a story is a story—more about the people and what’s happening inside them. Setting is important, but the heart is the reason I write.

Maybe that’s why I can write anywhere I go—it’s like taking family along. I just squeeze out a little bit of my day to visit with them. And it happens!

Thanks for the fun questions, Thea!

Can’t I do both and take a cruise to the jungle or cruise down the Amazon so it would be a cruise in the jungle. I like the thought of only unpacking once and staying in the same cabin for 7 nights relaxing though.

I’m a fan of cruises, so I’ll go for that. I would love to go on a Mediterranean cruise someday.

  3. Aurore

I would definitely not go to the jungle for fun. I’d be too afraid of all the horrible things which could happen. You know, poisonous spiders, snakes and such things. But the cruise would be great!
Thank you for Vivian’s interview. It’s impressive that you can write while on a trip. When I’m abroad, all I can do is visit and enjoy (and sleep after an exhausting day!).

Don’t think of all the nasty critters. What about all the cute ones like monkeys? Well if they stay very far away and in the trees that is!

I’ve been on a couple cruises, so I’d like to try a jungle vacation. There are so many beautiful sites I someday hope to see!

Well, since I’ve already been on a couple of cruises, I would choose a jungle adventure. I think it would be great fun to explore, hike and enjoy the amazing scenery!

Right now I’d pick a cruise. I’ve been on a 7 day Caribbean cruise, but it’s been years. If I were younger, I’d jump at the chance to go on a jungle romp. Limping along on the trails, wouldn’t be much fun. But maybe a hot, hunky Tarzan swinging through the jungle might be a good thing.

A cruise. Since I am dreaming, in the first class cabin. You know, the one with private staff! jepebATverizonDOTnet

I’ve been on only one cruise, but it definitely wasn’t my thing so I’d take the jungle, especially if it’s on a tropical island and there is warm clear water to swim and go scuba diving in nearby.

I would love to join a cruise. I often go to jungle and climbing when still at college, but never do cruise. Not enough money, lol! For the first time, I’ll join cruise at Singapore =)

I went on my first ever cruise last fall and loved it. So relaxing, great food and company. It totally recharged me, and I would love to go on another one.

I’ve been on several cruises so I think I would pick jungle adventure. I do love cruises though. I gain about 10 pounds from all the food.

  15. flchen1

Hmm… while the jungle would likely be pretty interesting, I think I’d choose the safe route and go with a cruise! I’m not much for humidity and huge bugs, both of which I’d imagine I’d find in a jungle ;p Call me chicken! Bok bok! A cruise also sounds like the perfect family vacation, as we could go with the extended family and everyone would have something to enjoy :)

I didn’t think about bringing extra family. You are very right. And bugs? I just watched an episode of Lost Girl with a huge foreign spider. I’ll pass!

I’ve never had the chance to go on a cruise or to go to a jungle adventure. I would like to go in both. On a cruise with my boyfriend and in a jungle adventure with my friends (I think It is not easy to do this vacation with your boyfriend) . My only problem is the money.

I love cruising. I’ve been on two so far both in the caribbean and loved them. The first was just with my DH and the second with our family of four. We had a blast exploring the islands (kinda junglie) and lazing about the boat. The best part is you don’t have to pack and unpack at each port

  18. donnas

Cruise. I am not an outdoorsy type person. I would do day trips but would never stay in the jungle. I dont camp either. Its just not for me.

  19. booklover0226

A cruise for sure. I’m just not that adventurous. Please I like to be pampered and a cruise is all about the pampering. LOL

I’ve always wanted to go on a cruise and that would be my pick. That way I could enjoy the big ship and the spectacular view while on the move.
