Interview with Yolanda Sfetsos

NRR- Can you share with us how you got started in writing?

When I was a teenager, I lived pretty far from my friends, so I spent a lot of time alone. Most of that time was spent reading and watching movies, which eventually led me to writing short stories. Before I knew it, I was spending so much time writing that the stories started to pile up and the ideas wouldn’t stop coming.

I used to take them in to school and have my friends read them. It was a lot of fun.

I kept writing, even after I left high school, but real life got in the way quite a few times. Still, I never lost the love of telling stories. Actually, the older I get, the more it intensifies.

NRR- What would you say are some of the challenges in being a published author?

The biggest challenge is probably getting your name out there. I find promo a really hard side of being a published author. Sometimes it’s hard to know where the best places to connect with readers are.

Still, I try my best because I love to chat to readers!

NRR- How were you inspired to write A Patch of Darkness?

Sierra Fox and her world came to me several years ago. I’d been reading a lot about ghosts, so of course it all sparked an idea I couldn’t shake. Besides, I’ve always loved ghost stories.

I wanted to delve into a world that’s so much like ours, but is also filled with danger and supernatural creatures hiding in the shadows.

NRR- What is in your to be read pile?

OMG, a lot of books! I have overflowing bookshelves, as well as a Kindle with heaps of books. Not to mention that I receive some for review and borrow others from the library.

There are just so many great books out there, and not enough time. Lol.

I have a lot of urban fantasy, YA, and mystery books I can’t wait to get stuck into.

NRR- What is your guilty pleasure?

Uh, my guilty pleasure… it would have to be watching MMA (especially the UFC). The idea of men and women getting into a cage to beat each other up shouldn’t appeal to me as much it does. Yet, I’m totally drawn to it. And I like it more each time I watch an event. :)

NRR- Can you share with us the storyline to A Patch of Darkness? Of course no spoilers.

A Patch of Darkness is the story of a spook catcher. Her name is Sierra Fox, and she lives in a fictional suburb in Sydney, Australia. In her world, ghosts are accepted into society but need to adhere to certain rules. When they misbehave, she steps in to capture and deliver them to the Spook Catcher Council for sentencing.

She faces a lot of challenges. Including self-discovery, and admitting things to herself that she’s tried to ignore for years, while she discovers a bunch of secrets about her familial line and the true capacity of her power.

NRR- What is next in the works for you?

I have a lot of writing planned. I have several series going on at the moment, so I’d like to keep writing the latest installments for those. But I also want to squeeze in some new writing of several ideas I have percolating in the back of my mind.

I’m always writing something. ;)

Book Blurb

All it takes is one weak seam for everything to fall apart.

Sierra Fox, Book 1

In a perfect world, Sierra Fox would have stayed away from the Council she left years ago. But in this world—where spirits have the right to walk among the living—it’s her job to round up troublesome spooks and bring them before that very same Council.

Though her desk is piled high with open cases, she can’t resist an anonymous summons to a mysterious late-night meeting with a bunch of other hunters, each of whom seems to have a unique specialty. The news is dire: something is tearing at the fabric of the universe. If the hunters can’t find who or why in time, something’s going to give in a very messy way.

As current cases, family secrets, new clues and her tangled love life slowly wind themselves into an impossible knot, Sierra finds herself the target of a power-sucking duo intent on stealing her mojo. And realizing she holds the key to the last hope of sealing the widening rift.

Warning: Spook catching: may contain traces of ectoplasm and otherworldly nasties. Not recommended for those with allergies to ghosts, demons, and with boyfriends who think your power is theirs. While reading, avoid dark patches and stay to the light.
